Training Description

This orientation to Collaborative Law will introduce the participant to the process of Collaborative Divorce from its inception through the first team meeting. The Collaborative Law team consists of the divorcing couple, their attorneys, a neutral mental health professional, and a neutral financial person. This training will introduce the participant to the role of the attorney, financial neutral, and mental health professional. This introduction will be of particular interest to the mental health professional looking to grow their practices and to work with divorcing families from a respectful and gentle manner as they navigate the emotionally charged divorce process. The practice of collaborative family law enables separating spouses to accomplish their divorce in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect in an environment in which both transparency and personal privacy are emphasized. In Collaborative Divorce the Mental Health Professional plays a central role in moving this emotionally driven process along. Licensed Mental Health Neutrals are positioned to identify and intervene with maladaptive behaviors that could stall the divorcing process.

Learning Objectives:
1)    The participant will learn about the history of collaborative law.
2)     The participant will gain an understanding of the role of the Attorney, Mental Health Professional (MHP), and the financial professional, from a neutral perspective.
3)    The participant will understand the paradigm shift of the attorney, MHP, and financial professional.
4)    The participant will understand the value of establishing rapport BEFORE the first team meeting from the MHP perspective.
5)    The participant will learn about the “initial interview” by the MHP.
6)    The participant will gain an understanding of the process of team meeting and the debriefing.
